Throughout the years I have used many different types of equipment for shelter, like tents, military ponchos, heavy-duty space blankets, and polyester tarps. All of these shelters have likes and dislikes. It’s not about right or wrong, but rather what fits me(or any other individual)better. Due to weight, set-up, and condensation, I am not a big fan of tents when backpacking. I used a military poncho to set up a shelter when I was serving and I like the lightweight, easy, and fast way to set up a basic cover. Plus, in case of rain, you have something to wear for protection if you are not setting it up as a shelter. Size is standard though and doesn’t offer a lot of space. On the other hand, polyester tarps come in many different sizes, providing more space, are also lightweight and you can set them up in different configurations. Heavy-duty space blankets are excellent choices for emergency shelter setup, lightweight but come in a standard size, so space is not much, and are not very durable. You cannot set them up many times. They will eventually break down, especially at the corners where the grommets are.
I decided to get an oilskin or canvas tarp and I settled on a Tentsmiths oilskin tarp. The tarp measures 8×8 and weighs 4.2 pounds. It has a good ratio between size and weight. The quality construction of the tarp is amazing. It does cost more than a polyester tarp made overseas but this is a tarp that will probably outlast you and will serve for generations to come. Look it like a lifetime investment, in the end, you will save money because you will not have to buy tarps every now and then.
The tarp has heavy-duty loops in all corners and on the seam. It also comes with a central loop. All loops have reinforced stitching. The loops can withstand much abuse, tugging, and pulling, while setting up or putting down your shelter. The dark brown fabric weighs 6.25 oz per yard according to the specifications you can find on Tentsmiths’ site.
A traditional piece of gear of excellent craftsmanship is always welcome to any adventure kit. It is an investment but it will withstand time and abuse and will share many stories with you.
